If it is beyond overhaul in any or both of the CV joints, there are rebuilt CV boots available on exchange basis, before commencing the job, all options must be considered. Should a decision be made to refurbish a CV joint, then establish the price of the spare as well as its availability before dismantling the CV boot. First, loosen the CV boot with the car and then put it in a vise, where jaws should be protected with woods or rags not to scratch the surface. Chop off both boot clamps and move the boot to the middle of the CV boot and mark the alignment points on the outer race and the tripod bearing assembly before removing the outer race. Take off the snap-ring from the end of the axleshaft and put a mark identifying the position of the tripod bearing assembly to that of the axleshaft. Fasten the bearing rollers with tape, and the tripod bearing assembly should be unbolted by inserting a brass drift followed by a hammer; the rollers should not be allowed to drop. Take off the stop-ring, slide off the old boot and throw it away in the bin. Remove the old grease from the outer race and tripod bearing assembly and it is necessary that each bearing roller is marked in conjunction with the shaft for ease in reassembly. Check all those parts which may have worn out to ensure that they are replaced when necessary. In reassembly, the splines of the axleshaft which concerns the new boot should be covered with a tape before putting the new boot into the axleshaft and then erasing the covering tape. Make sure of the positions of the match marks and place the tripod assembly on the axleshaft; place the outer snap-ring next. Same CV joint grease is required to be applied on the inner operating surface of the bearing; each roller must be properly fitted; outer race should also be filled with grease before fitting properly and ensuring the alignment marks. Place the boot into the grooves and level the inside pressure of the boot with the help of a flat-head non-sharpened screwdriver. Fit and lock the new boot clamps and then fit the CV boot assembly. For the outer CV joint, do disassembly process as done to the inner joint boot clamps should be cut to remove the boot over the shaft. Scrape off all old grease from the CV joints and clean the CV joints in solvent, then drive out the solvent and dry the CV joints with air. Check the outer CV joint housing for wear and if there is need one should replace the CV boot. Place the new outer boot over the axleshaft, use tape over the splines so as to minimize on wear, put the specified quantity of grease on the outer joint and boot before fixing the new clamps in place. After cleaning the inner CV joint the whole part should be reassembled, and the last step is to install the CV boot.
