If ever the CV joints or boots has to be replaced, it is advisable to look at all of the possibilities before commencing the job as complete rebuild CV boots are available for exchange. Before dismantling a car, it is good to check the price and market of the spare parts that will be needed. In order to have access to dismantle the inner CV joint the following are the procedures to follow: First, you are required to remove the CV boot by pulling it out and placing it in a vise the jaws of which should be wooden to prevent abrasion of the CV boot. Rotate the wheels and check how freely they rotate, to check CV joint; if a boot is damaged then the joint has to be disassembled, cleaned and then looked for further damages. If the joint is ok then apply grease to it and fit a new cover. Saw off the boot clamps, half the boot and unbolt the CV joint housing with the rollers still retained. Take off the spider assembly snap-ring and note down the position of the tri-pot on the axleshaft such that it may easily be reinstalled. A brass drift and hammer can then be used to remove the spider assembly from the axleshaft, after which all the parts of the machine should be cleaned, and the components checked for signs of wear and tear. Should any part appear to be worn, then the whole CV boot assembly should be changed. After that, wind the splines on the axleshaft with a tape putting a clamps and a boot to the shaft also install the tri-pot spider making sure that it lines with marks. Place the spider on the shaft, screw several snap rings in the groove, grease the tri-pot and the housing. Place the tri-pot into the housing and place grease around it as well as ensure the boot is in the right position. Ensures the pressure in the boot is made equal and ensure that the boot is well positioned. Place the new boot clamps in the right fashion, and use the correct clamping tool to fix them. For the outer CV joint you will need to cut and remove the boot clamps, then push the boot back and twist the joint off of the CV boot shaft using a soft-faced hammer. As with the wheels, they are cleaned, checked for signs of wear and if severely worn then the entire CV boot needs to be replaced. For the outer CV joint, slide a new sealing boot and clamp on the axleshaft, and then pack the outer CV joint with grease, locate the splines of the joint into the corresponding slots from the axleshaft before driving the joint onto the axleshaft. Situate the boot ends and stabilize the pressure distribution and then tighten the clamps in the described method above. Finally, install the CV boot.
