    Q:
How to remove and reassemble a driveaxle and CV Boot on Chevrolet Corvette? Posted by Customer
    A:
Take off the driveaxle and fasten it to the vise and tighten adding wood or cloth in between the jaw to avoid scratching the metal. Remove the boot clamps and pull the boot off the CV joint and to drive the CV joint off the shaft use the hammer and brass punch. In order to take out the retaining ring and slide the CV joint boot off the axleshaft use work snap-ring pliers. Clean the outer CV joint with solvent and disassemble so as to inspect components for wear. If the joint is in good shape reassemble the joint and place the balls back into the cage making sure that all the parts fit well into place. Place the clamps and boot onto the axleshaft, screw in the retaining ring and then, finally hammer the joint into the axleshaft with a block of wood. There is the application of CV joint grease at the assembly and boot, followed by equalizing pressure in the boot, with final clamping in place. For the inner CV boot cut off the inner boot clamps, pry the wire ring bearing retainer and pull off the CV joint housing for the models other than the 2007 and later Z06/Z51. Take out snap-ring and the inner race and make index mark which will be helpful in the reassembly of the part. It must be cleaned and inspected and the joint reconstructed through the cage, then the inner race and the balls together with the grease. Screw the housing and check the boot is inserted and placed and tighten the clamps of wire ring bearing retainer. As to 2007 and later Z06/Z51 models, the same procedure is to be followed with the focus made on the type of joint and the fact that the rollers should not be lost during this process. It is coupled to an adjustable joint where you will also have to ensure the pressure inside the boot is balanced before you make the final screw adjustments on the clamps.
