- A:Mark the relationship of the intermediate shaft to the steering shaft U-joint and remove the pinch bolt. Separate the tie-rod ends from the steering knuckles and detach the links from the ends of the stabilizer bar. Remove the heat shield fasteners and heat shield. On certain models, remove the catalytic converter and front exhaust pipe, or the front "Y" exhaust pipe. Remove the rear transmission mount and, on AWD models, disconnect the driveshaft. On 2.4L models, disconnect the electrical connectors to the electronic power assist motor. On hydraulically assisted power steering gears, detach the pressure and return lines from the steering gear and the bracket that secures them.
