How to remove and reinstall a cylinder head on Chevrolet Cobalt? Posted by Customer
    A:
Don't try removing the cylinder head until the engine has completely cooled down to avoid distorting the head. Have new head bolts on hand before starting this project. Start by disconnecting the negative battery cable. After letting the engine cool, drain the coolant system completely. Take out the drivebelt and drivebelt tensioner. Next, remove the exhaust manifold and intake manifold. Then you can take off the timing chain. Label all electrical connectors obstructing cylinder head removal and mark each connector for reassembly as necessary. Remove head bolts running in opposite direction of tightening sequence then throw them away one by one. Loosen bolts incrementally by a quarter-turn.Camshafts, rocker arms, and hydraulic lash adjusters if necessary for a full head overhaul should be removed using a prybar at corners of gasket sealing surfaces between head-to-block mating surface avoiding prying in gasket sealing area.Lift on hammer with wood block,to get it going if difficult to lift out.Take care not to damage or scratch gasket sealing surfaces when placing cylinder heads on wood blocks.Remove old-style cylinder head gasket keeping track of its position so that it can be installed properly next time around. The carbon from both mating surfaces on the block and cylinder head is scraped off using a gasket scraper which is followed by wiping with lacquer thinner or acetone.Do not let debris fall into cylinders wrap open areas of motor with rags and use vacuum cleaner to suck any up.Examine engine block and cylinerhead matting services for damages.Straighten up those threaded holes on your block clean them up with tap.Position new gasket over dowels placed in an engine block ensuring that even while installing cylinder heads it will not move.Install new top end bolts starting two steps following manufacturer's procedure. To install camshaft sprocket, attach exhaust manifolsd, install intake plenum etc., just reverse order for remaining installation steps.Reconnect battery, change oil and filter, fill cooling system and start engine making sure that there are no leaks of the coolant or oil.

    Q:
How to remove and reinstall a cylinder head in four cylinder engine on Saturn Vue? Posted by Customer
    A:
Remove the battery cable from the car's negative terminal and take at least three days to let the engine cool before draining the coolant. Take out the drivebelt and the drivebelt idler, then remove the exhaust manifold and the intake manifold as well, after which you'll have to disconnect the coolant hose on the cylinder head. Take out the timing chain and the plate attached to it and detach electrical connections from the head of the cylinder that may hinder the process of removal; use adhesive tape to note connections for reconnection. Take out the cylinder head bolts and throw them away, and rattle the bolts with a prescribed sequence. It is advisable to loosen the gasket seal at the corners of the head-to-block mating surface with a pry bar, and lift the cylinder head off the engine with the aid of a wood block and hammer in as many places as you feel some point of resistance. Place the cylinder head with the gasket surfaces on wooden blocks to avoid damaging the sealing surfaces and then remove the old cylinder head gasket and remember the correct way it should be fitted. Make sure the surfaces of the cylinder head and the block to be joined by a gasket are free of carbon and of any kind of residue of the old gasket; use a gasket scraper and the brake system cleaner for that. During repair and reassembly, use shop rags to cover the open areas of the engine to avoid having debris inside the cylinders; use vacuum cleaner to clean the cylinders of any debris which may have fallen into it. The flatness of the mating surfaces of the engine block and cylinder head should also be checked for nicks and deep scratches and in chasing the threaded holes of the cylinder head bolts, a correct size tap should be used. Ensure that this new gasket lies in the dowels of the block which should then be followed by placing the cylinder head on the engine block while avoiding to dislodge the gasket. Place fresh cylinder head bolts and tighten using proper torque indicated and sequence that is prescribed; paint an arrow on each of the main cylinder head bolts that may be further tightened by an additional 155 degrees. Replace the timing chain, exhaust manifold, and intake manifold; the remaining procedures are the reversal of the above actions taken. Crank the battery connection loose and tighten again, replace the engine oil and filter, fill up the cooling system, turn the engine on and search for any of leaks of oil and coolant.

    Q:
Is cylinder head removal a challenging and time-consuming task that requires special tools in 3.0L V6 engine on Saturn Vue? Posted by Customer
    A:
The removal of the cylinder head is quite complex as well as a time-consuming one; it involves several special tools before undertaking the job. Start with the removal of the cable from the negative post of the battery then remove the cooling system and then take off the valve covers. After that, remove the upper and lower intake manifolds with intake manifolds pacer, coolant crossover housing and rear exhaust manifold with some care regarding the exhaust pipe connection from the front cylinder head. Take off timing belt, camshaft sprockets and rear timing belt cover, and also interchangeably, remove the upper radiator hose and the housing of the coolant extension. Subsequently, take out the exhaust camshafts, dipstick tube and the PCM from its mount and apart from it, pull the grounds from the heads and the rear engine lifting bracket. Remove the oxygen sensor wires and mounting brackets and examine the cylinder head for hoses, wires, and other parts. When removing the cylinder head bolts, use a breaker bar to turn the bolts in 1/4 turn at a time; use a pry bar on the corners of the cylinder head to engine block mating surface in order to break the gasket seal but do not pry on the gasket sealing area. Remove the cylinder head(s) from the engine (with help from a wood block and hammer if the head stuck in the block) and take out the cylinder head gasket(s); the gaskets have top and bottom sides that are different. For installation remove any deposits on the mating surfaces of the cylinder heads and engine block by scraping and washing them with cleaning solutions to eliminate the presence of any debris. Examine the flattens of the mating surfaces and pass a tap in the cylinder head bolt holes. Place the head gasket in place with the part numbers standing up, place the cylinder heads on the engine block over the gaskets, and new cylinder head bolts must be used as they are torque-to-yield. To achieve the correct torque, use a torque wrench in the first step and in the subsequent steps you will need a breaker bar with a torque-angle gauge; torquing should be done in five sequences, tightening to 90 degrees and then repeating this to 120 degrees, 140 degrees,180 degrees and finally 250 degrees. The rest steps of installing the device are opposite to the process of removing the device, as it was mentioned above. Last but not the least, put back the battery, replace the engine oil and filter, examine the cooling system if it requires a refill and start the engine to check for any oil and coolant leak.

    Q:
What should be avoided during the cleaning process for the 2006 Pontiac G6? Posted by Customer
    A:
Using anything but a new razor blade can damage the components. If oil is present on the mating surfaces during installation, the gasket may not seal correctly, leading to leaks.
