- A:To remove the oil seal from the end of the axle housing, first remove the axle shaft. Then, use a pry tool to carefully remove the old oil seal. Apply a film of multi-purpose grease to the oil seal recess and install the new seal evenly with a hammer and seal installation tool, large socket, or piece of pipe. Ensure that the lips of the seal are facing in and the metal face is visible from the end of the axle housing. Disassemble the hub further if necessary, then clean and reassemble using new bearing cups and lubricating with wheel bearing grease. To install, place the hub assembly on the axle tube and adjust the bearings by tightening the adjusting nut to 50 ft-lbs, then backing it off and tightening it hand-tight.
