- A:Broken valve springs and defective Valve Stem Oil Seals can be replaced without removing the cylinder head. Two special tools and a compressed air source are required for this operation. If compressed air is not available, a length of nylon rope can be used to prevent the valves from falling into the cylinder. The procedure involves removing the rocker arm cover and spark plug, turning the crankshaft to top dead center, connecting an air hose to the spark plug hole, removing the rocker arm and pushrod, applying compressed air to the cylinder, and using a valve spring compressor to remove the valve spring and seal. The valve stem should be inspected for damage, and a new Valve Stem Oil Seal should be installed. The valve spring, retainer, and keepers are then reinstalled, and the rocker arm, pushrod, spark plug, and rocker arm cover are all put back in place.
