The Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor provides the PCM with a crankshaft position signal, which the PCM uses to determine the spark sequence for each cylinder, control ignition timing, calculate engine speed, and for misfire detection by the Onboard Diagnostic system. The sensor is triggered by slots cut into a reluctor ring on the crankshaft and is positioned approximately 0.050 inch from the reluctor ring. The ignition system will not operate if the PCM does not receive a crankshaft position sensor input. When replacing the sensor, a Crankshaft Position Sensor variation learning procedure should be performed to avoid a false misfire diagnostic trouble code. If a false code is set after replacement, take the vehicle to a dealership service department or other properly equipped repair shop. To replace the sensor, disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. The sensor is located at the left rear of the engine block on inline engines, and behind the starter on 5.3L engines. On V8 engines, remove the starter and disconnect the wiring from the sensor. Remove the sensor mounting bolt and the sensor. To install, reverse the removal process, ensuring to install new O-rings on the sensor and lube the O-rings with engine oil.
