The resistance should be higher, approximately 90 ohms.

To check the fuel level sensor, start by removing the fuel tank and fuel pump. Then, connect the probes of an ohmmeter to the fuel level sensor signal and ground terminals of the fuel pump module electrical connector. Position the float in the down (empty) position and note the reading on the ohmmeter, which should be low (approximately 2 ohms). Move the float up to the full position and observe the meter, where the resistance should be higher (approximately 90 ohms). If the resistance values are incorrect or if the resistance does not change smoothly as the float travels from empty to full, it is necessary to replace the fuel level sensor assembly. For 1995 and earlier models, the fuel level sensor is part of the tank unit assembly, so only the fuel pump is serviced separately. For 1996 and later models with a 4-cylinder engine, disconnect the fuel level sensor electrical connector, remove the retaining clip, and slide off the fuel level sensor from the module. Note the wiring routing for installation. For 1996 and later models with a 6-cylinder engine, the fuel level sensor is part of the fuel pump assembly and cannot be serviced separately. If the fuel level sensor is defective, the entire fuel pump assembly must be replaced. Installation is the reverse of removal for both cases.
