- A:The coolant temperature indicator system consists of a temperature gauge on the dash and a sensor mounted on the engine. The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor provides a signal to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and Body Control Module (BCM), which operate the temperature gauge. If an overheating condition has occurred, first check the coolant level in the system and that the coolant mixture is correct. Also, check the Troubleshooting section before assuming that the temperature indicator is faulty. If the temperature gauge does not move from the C position, check the wiring harness connections going to the instrument cluster. If there is a problem with the ECT sensor, it is very likely that the CHECK ENGINE light will come on and the sensor will need replacing or the circuit will need repair.Posted by GMPartsGiant Specialist
