Q:
How to replace spark plugs? Posted by Customer
A:
When replacing your spark plugs, start by opening the hood and labeling each spark plug wire to ensure correct installation. You'll need several tools for this task, including a spark plug socket with a padded interior to prevent damage to the new plugs' porcelain insulators, various extensions, a gap gauge for checking and adjusting plug gaps, and a torque wrench for tightening the new plugs. It's advisable to purchase the new spark plugs in advance, adjust their gaps to the specified values, and replace them one at a time. Allow the engine to cool completely before removing any plugs, and during this time, inspect the new plugs for defects and adjust their gaps if necessary. Checking the gap involves using a wire-type gauge to ensure the wire slides between the electrodes with a slight drag, matching the specified gap on the Emissions Control Information label. Adjust the gap by bending the side electrode slightly, avoiding damage to the porcelain insulator. Once the engine is cool, remove a spark plug wire from one plug, preferably using a plug wire removal tool, and blow away any dirt or debris near the spark plug hole with compressed air or a bicycle pump to prevent contamination. Use a spark plug socket to remove the plug by turning it counterclockwise. Inspect the removed plug for indications of the engine's running condition. Thread one of the new plugs into the hole, hand-tighten it, and then use a torque wrench or ratchet to secure it. You can use a short length of rubber hose for threading to prevent cross-threading. Before attaching the spark plug wire to the new plug, inspect it, and finally, repeat the process for the remaining spark plugs, replacing them individually to avoid mixing up the wires.
