Q:
How to remove and install a transmission? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the transmission, first disconnect the battery cable and raise the vehicle on jackstands. Remove the skid plate and crossmember, drain the transmission fluid, and remove any exhaust components that interfere with removal. Mark the relationship of the torque converter to the driveplate, remove the starter motor, and detach the covers on each side of the bell housing. Remove the torque converter-to-drive plate bolts, remove the driveshaft, and disconnect the shill cable and electrical connectors from the transmission. Remove the heat shield, disconnect the transmission cooler lines, and remove the transfer case if necessary. Support the engine and transmission, remove the transmission mount and crossmember, and remove the bolts or studs securing the transmission to the engine. To install the transmission, make sure the torque converter is securely engaged in the pump, raise the transmission into position, and turn the torque converter to line up the holes with the driveplate. Move the transmission forward carefully until the dowel pins and torque converter are engaged, install the dipstick tube and seal, and tighten the transmission-to-engine bolts securely. Install the crossmember, torque converter-to-drive plate bolts, starter motor, and any exhaust components that were removed. Fill the transmission with fluid, run the engine, and check for leaks.
