- A:To remove the control arm, start by marking the relationship of the control arm to the front mounting bracket while the vehicle is at normal ride height. Then, loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the front of the vehicle, and remove the wheel. Next, remove the pinch bolt securing the balljoint stud to the steering knuckle, followed by the bolts and nuts that attach the control arm to the subframe. Once the control arm is removed, inspect it for distortion and check the bushings for wear. Replace any worn or damaged parts, but do not attempt to straighten a bent control arm. If the bushings are cracked or worn, take the control arm to an automotive machine shop to have the front pivot bushing replaced. The rear bushing can be removed and replaced with its mounting sleeve by removing the rear bushing bolt. To install the control arm, reverse the removal steps, making sure to tighten all fasteners to the specified torque values and using a new balljoint pinch bolt. Finally, install the wheel, lower the vehicle, and tighten the lug nuts to the correct torque specifications.
