- A:Start by loosening the wheel lug nuts and raising the rear of the vehicle on jack stands. Remove the wheels and then loosen the equalizer nut to slacken the cables. Disconnect the cable to be replaced from the equalizer. Next, remove the brake drum from the axle flange and the brake shoe assembly far enough to disconnect the cable end from the parking brake lever.
