- Q:How to remove and install a shift cable? Posted by Customer
- A:To remove the shift cable, first disconnect the battery and block the rear wheels. Then, disconnect the cable from the transmission shift lever and unclip it from its retainer. Remove the cable connector retaining clip and the cable retaining clip, and separate the cable halves to remove the transmission end of the shift cable. To remove the upper cable, remove the steering column trim covers and knee bolster, pry the shift cable ball socket from the shift lever ball pivot, and remove the retaining clip securing the cable to the steering column bracket. Working below the steering column, remove the bolt and cable support wire securing the cable to the lower half of the steering column. Separate the upper shift cable from the lower shift cable and remove the cable grommet. To install the cable, make sure the driver's shift lever and the transmission shift lever are in the Park position. Insert a new cable retaining clip onto the female half of the cable at the cable connector and align the male half of the cable with the female half of the cable. Push the connector halves together until the blue adjustment spring is fully compressed. Release the lower end of the cable and allow the blue spring to self-adjust the cable. Insert the cable connector retaining clip and test the vehicle for proper shift operation.Posted by GMPartsGiant Specialist
