    Q:
How to disconnect, remove, and install the shift cable, and what steps are involved in adjusting it on Chevrolet Cruze? Posted by Customer
    A:
In the event of hard shifting, disconnect the cable at the transaxle and operate the shifter from the driver's seat; if the shift lever moves smoothly through all positions with the cable disconnected, then the cable should be adjusted as described later. To remove and install the shift cable, block the rear wheels, apply the parking brake, and shift the transmission into Neutral. Remove the floor center console left-side trim panel, then take out the instrument panel left-side support brace bolts and brace. Free the driver's side carpet and push it aside for access to the cable grommet where the cable passes through the firewall. Use a flat-blade screwdriver to pry the shift cable end from the shift lever pin, squeeze the U-shaped shift cable retaining clip to slide it out of the bracket, and detach the cable from the bracket. Open the hood and disconnect the shift cable end from the shift lever on the transaxle using a flat-bladed tool. Use needle-nose pliers to squeeze the clip on the shift cable and pull it up from its bracket, then trace the shift cable to the engine-compartment firewall and pry the large rubber cable grommet from the firewall. Carefully remove the shift cable by pulling it through the hole in the firewall from the engine compartment side. For installation, follow the reverse of removal, ensuring the shift cable is installed along its original path within the engine compartment and passenger cabin, and that the cable end fittings are firmly snapped back into place onto their respective levers. For adjustment, place the shift lever inside the car in Park, detach the cable lock from the range select lever on the transaxle, and use a small screwdriver to release the tab for the adjustment lock. Ensure there is no tension on the cable, push the white adjuster tab back into place, and verify that the engine will start only in the Park and Neutral positions, with all gear ranges selectable. If the engine can be started in any position other than Park or Neutral, check the adjustment of the Transmission Range Switch, then adjust and check the shift cable again.
