- A:On models from 1974 to 1977, the speedometer and gauge clusters can be removed separately for service. To do this, start by disconnecting the negative battery cable. If the vehicle has an automatic transmission, disconnect the shift indicator cable on the shift bowl. Then, remove the three attaching screws and pull the cluster out enough to disconnect the wiring connectors. Finally, remove the cluster. For models from 1978 to 1980, the speedometer and gauges are removed together. Begin by disconnecting the negative battery cable and removing the cluster pad assembly and steering column trim cover. Disconnect the shift indicator clip from the steering column bowl and remove the four screws that attach the cluster to the panel adapter. Pull the cluster outward to disconnect the speedometer cable and wiring, and then remove the cluster.Posted by GMPartsGiant Specialist
