Never drive the vehicle without the air filter, as it can cause excessive engine wear and potentially lead to a fire under the hood. To remove the air filter on 2.2L and 2.4L engines (Cobalt/GS and ION models), loosen the clamp securing the inlet tube to the air filter cover, release the clips that secure the two halves of the air filter housing, and separate the cover halves to remove the air filter element. For 2.2L and 2.4L engines (HHR models), lift the engine cover off, loosen the intake duct hose clamp, disconnect the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor electrical connector, and remove the filter housing assembly from the engine. Place the housing upside down on a bench, remove the filter housing mounting fasteners, separate the housing halves, and remove the filter element. For 2.0L turbocharged/supercharged engines, unfasten the spring clips or remove the air filter housing top cover mounting screws, separate the cover from the housing, and remove the air filter element. Inspect the outer surface of the filter element and replace if dirty. If moderately dusty, it can be cleaned with compressed air. Wipe or vacuum the inside of the air filter housing and cover. Place the new filter into the housing, ensuring it is properly seated. Installation of the housing is the reverse of removal.
