    Q:
What steps should be followed to properly drain and replace transmission fluid and Automatic Transmission Filter on Cadillac Escalade? Posted by Customer
    A:
In this process, the transmission fluid should be drained and replenished at set intervals and, in particular, when the engine is quite hot, the process should not begin as it will require some time to cool down. Buy the right type of transmission fluid, a new filter, as well as a pan gasket, before the job starts. Other necessary tools are a floor jack, jackstands to support it, a drain pan that may require an eight-quart at least, newspapers and clean rags. Tire up the car on jackstands and if the front portion of the exhaust conflicts with the removal of the pan for the transmission fluid, then it is to be removed. Place the drain pan directly under the transmission pan, ordinarily you remove the bolts from three sides leaving the front side to drain. Then, when most of the fluid has gone, undo the remaining bolts and gingerly let the pan down to drain the rest. The transmission pan mounting bolts must be unscrewed and the pan can be released with a screwdriver. It is important that all the remains of the old gasket and sealant must be removed from the surface of the transmission gasket and the clean the pan with solvent if available, using compressed air for drying. Some models have magnets in the transmission pan to catch metal debris; this should be thoroughly cleaned, it is not unusual to find a small amount of metal material here, but a good quantity should lead to seeking advice from the dealer or a transmission specialist. Pull the filter straight down and up, take it out from the valve body inside of the transmission , then, apply a new seal and filter with the use of seal puller and slide hammer. Make sure the gasket surface on the transmission pan in clean, place in a new gasket, reinstall the magnet, and place in the new pan gasket. Position the pan on the transmission and put all the bolt on them tightening each of them gradually to the developed torque. One more instruction is that one has to add new fluid to the transmission, checking on the specifications as well. With the transmission in Park and the parking brake engaged turn the engine and allow it to idle, but do not race the engine. Shift the gear selector up and down through all the movement and back again to the park position and allow the engine to run a while. Examine the quantity of the fluid, which may be scarce, and then pour some more to the recommended level on the dipstick without a chance that it will be in excess of the limit. Unlock the bonnet for later checks, but beware any dripping fluids during the first few journeys and check the fluid level when the transmission is hot. The old fluid that has been removed from the transmission cannot be refilled and should be disposed in the right manner; this may be done by consulting the auto parts stores, disposal centers or the local environmental departments. On cooling the fluid can be poured into a container and transported to the disposal point instead of just sprinkling it on the ground or washing down the drain.

    Q:
How to perform a transmission fluid and Automatic Transmission Filter replacement on Chevrolet Avalanche? Posted by Customer
    A:
Always at the designated maintenance intervals, there should be a changing of transmission fluid. However, do not commence until the engine is completely cooled. Begin by getting a fresh pan gasket, new filter and transmission fluid. The tools to have include drain pan with sufficient capacity, clean rags, newspapers, jackstands for secure vehicle support, floor jack and others. Elevate the vehicle and secure it on jackstands if pan removal is obstructed by exhaust system front section. Underneath the transmission pan have a drain pan in position, remove drain plug (if available), allow fluid to drain till trickling stops and then replace the plug again. Remove bolts from three sides of the pan if there's no drain plug; loosen the remaining ones slightly and lower the pan to get rid of most of the fluid in it. Then remove bolts carefully lower the pan and let out all the remaining fluid in it. Remove heat shield close to catalytic converter on right hand side to access pan bolts. On driver's side, for accessing pan bolts remove shift linkage. Undoing transmission pan mounting bolts with screwdriver gently pry off the pan. Clean up gasket surface thoroughly on transmission to get rid of any leftover old gasket or sealant materials thereon.Turn off your vehicle and disconnect 12V battery negative terminal.New one must be fitted while referring to diagrams & instructions given by manufacturer as this cannot be done any other way.Make sure that new gasket is attached to clean transmission pan's gasket surface before placing back onto transmission & tightening all bolts.Refer to powertrain control/emissions diagnosis manual for proper diagnostic steps.Remove heat shield close to catalytic converter on right hand side to access pan bolts.Do not drive anymore; rather shift lever will stay put at any chosen gear. The power from engine has been evenly distributed through five gears but only one is used at any given moment.Clean up gasket surface thoroughly on transmission to get rid of any leftover old gasket or sealant materials thereon. This must be done with the engine running at fast idle speed, transmission in Park and cycling through each gear position back to Park before returning to idle. Thus the fluid level will be low and it will have to be added until it reaches the mark on the dipstick but without overfilling.Turn off your vehicle and disconnect 12V battery negative terminal.New one must be fitted while referring to diagrams & instructions given by manufacturer as this cannot be done any other way.Make sure that new gasket is attached to clean transmission pan's gasket surface before placing back onto transmission & tightening all bolts.Refer to powertrain control/emissions diagnosis manual for proper diagnostic steps. With the engine running at a fast idle and the transmission in Park, cycle the gear selector through each range and back to Park before letting the engine idle.Tighten each bolt gradually to the specified torque. Reinstall components removed for pan bolt access, lower the vehicle, and add about 4 quarts of the specified automatic transmission fluid through the filler tube. The above mentioned procedure should be performed every 30,000 miles. As such, the fluid level is likely to be low hence more should be included until it hits line on dipstick avoiding overfilling. Finally look out for leaks beneath vehicle during first trips and when transmission is hot check again its fluid level.
