Q:
How do you remove the steering gear assembly? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the rack and pinion assembly, start by disconnecting the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Then, park the vehicle with the front wheels pointing straight ahead and loosen the front wheel lug nuts. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, and remove the wheels. Mark the relationship of the intermediate shaft to the steering shaft U-joint and remove the pinch bolt. Separate the tie-rod ends from the steering knuckles and detach the links from the ends of the stabilizer bar. Remove the heat shield fasteners and heat shield. On certain models, remove the catalytic converter and front exhaust pipe, or the front "Y" exhaust pipe. Remove the rear transmission mount and, on AWD models, disconnect the driveshaft. On 2.4L models, disconnect the electrical connectors to the electronic power assist motor. On hydraulically assisted power steering gears, detach the pressure and return lines from the steering gear and the bracket that secures them. Remove the transmission mount mounting fasteners and move the mount aside. Remove the rack and pinion mounting bolts. On later models, partially loosen and lower the subframe to allow for the removal clearance of the electronic power assist motor. Finally, separate the intermediate shaft U-joint from the rack and pinion input shaft and remove the rack and pinion assembly out the right side of the vehicle (models with electric power steering) or the left side (models with hydraulic power steering). To install the rack and pinion assembly, raise it into position and connect the intermediate shaft U-joint to the steering input shaft, aligning the marks. Tighten the pinch bolt and install the rack and pinion mounting bolts. Connect the tie-rod ends to the steering knuckle arms. The remainder of the installation is the reverse of removal, making sure to tighten all fasteners to the torque specifications. Finally, have the wheel alignment checked and adjusted if necessary.
