How to replace a Speedometer Head? Posted by Customer

Disconnect the negative battery cable and disable the air bag system. Remove the left side trim plate, instrument cluster housing screws, and instrument cluster. If the vehicle is equipped with tilt-wheel steering, working room can be gained by removing the tilt-wheel cover. Remove the speedometer lens screws and remove the speedometer lens. Disconnect the speedometer cable by pushing in on the retaining clip and pulling back on the cable. Remove the screws securing the speedometer to the instrument panel, then remove the speedometer assembly. Install the speedometer assembly and the screws securing the speedometer assembly to the instrument panel. Connect the speedometer cable. Install the speedometer lens and retaining screws. Install the instrument cluster housing and retaining screws. If equipped with tilt-wheel steering and the tilt-wheel cover was removed, replace the cover. Install the left side trim plate. Connect the negative battery cable. Tighten the cable bolt to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm). Enable the air bag system. Reset the radio, clock and any other applicable electronic devices.

You may want to place a rag over the steering column to help prevent scratches. With vehicles equipped with tilt steering, it will help to lower the steering wheel all the way, then unscrew the tilt wheel lever. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disconnect the speedometer cable and pull it through the firewall. Remove the left side hush panel retaining screws and nut. Remove the right side hush panel retaining screws and nut. Remove the shift indicator cable clip. Remove the steering column trim plate. Put the gear selector in L. Remove the retaining screws and gently pull out the instrument cluster trim plate. Disconnect the parking brake cable at the lever by pushing it forward and sliding it from its slot. Unbolt and lower the steering column. Remove the gauge cluster retaining screws. Pull the cluster out far enough to disconnect any wires. Remove the instrument cluster. Install the gauge cluster, connect the electrical connectors and install the retaining screws. Position the steering column and install the retaining bolts. Connect the parking brake cable at the lever. Put the gear selector in L. Install the instrument cluster trim plate. Install the steering column trim plate. Install the shift indicator cable clip. Install the right side hush panel retaining screws and nut. Install the left side hush panel retaining screws and nut. Pull the speedometer cable through the firewall and connect to the speedometer. Connect the negative battery cable.

How to Remove and Install an Instrument Cluster on Buick Century and Regal? Posted by Customer

Disconnect the negative battery cable, remove the headlight switch knob and escutcheon, carefully pry out and remove the instrument trim plate, remove the 5 screws and cluster lens, remove the screws and gauge, remove the left-hand instrument panel trim cover, remove the 4 screws holding the cluster carrier to the instrument panel, disconnect the speedometer cable at the transmission or in the engine compartment, remove the steering column trim cover, disconnect the shift indicator clip, lower the steering column by removing the two bolts that fasten the column to the dash panel and position onto front seat, pull the cluster forward far enough to disconnect the speedometer cable and bulbs at rear of the cluster, securely apply the hand brake or block the wheels, pull the gear selector lever down into low gear, pull the instrument cluster out far enough to remove the single screw which fastens the Speed Sensor optic head to the speedometer, then remove the cluster, disconnect the cluster harness connector, disconnect the ground strap from the back side cluster carrier, pull whole cluster assembly out, unscrew knob from trip set lever, remove the 4 screws from clear cluster lens cover to cluster carrier, remove clear lens and black filler, remove spring and needle assembly from shift indicator, remove the 5 screws holding tube and circuit board assembly to cluster carrier, lift the tube and circuit board assembly out of cluster carrier noting the position of the gaskets covering the indicator lights, hold the speedometer frame against the tube and circuit board face plate and remove the two standard head screws from the face plate, and remove mechanical speedometer assembly. Installation is the reverse of removal.
