To remove the thermostat, start by disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal and draining the cooling system. If the coolant is still in good condition, it can be saved and reused. The thermostat housing assembly is located on the opposite end of the engine from the drivebelt, under the throttle body. Remove the oil filler cap and engine cover, then disconnect the intake air duct. If there is a fuel pipe shield, remove it as well. Disconnect the radiator hose and both heater inlet and outlet hoses from the thermostat housing assembly. Remove the bolts attaching the housing assembly to the engine, as well as the bolt for the radiator hose tube support bracket. Finally, remove the thermostat from the housing and clean the housing and engine mating surfaces. To install a new thermostat, start by installing it with a new seal and tightening the bolts to the specified torque. The rest of the installation is the reverse of the removal process. Refill the cooling system, start the engine, and check for leaks and proper thermostat operation once the engine reaches normal operating temperature.
