To remove the turn signal switch on early models, first disconnect the negative battery terminal and disable the airbag system. Then, remove the steering wheel and the airbag clock spring. Use a lock plate removal tool to depress the lock plate and remove the retaining ring. Remove the hazard warning knob, turn signal cancel cam, spring, and actuating arm. Next, remove the turn signal switch mounting screws and the knee bolster panel below the steering column. Unplug the turn signal switch electrical connector and remove the wiring protector. Attach a length of mechanic's wire to the electrical connector and pull the wiring harness through the steering column to remove the switch assembly. To install the new switch, attach the mechanic's wire to the electrical connector and slowly pull the wiring harness through the steering column. Seat the turn signal switch on the column and install the mounting screws, lever actuating arm, and hazard knob. Connect the switch electrical connector and reinstall the wiring protector. Install the spring, cancel cam, lock plate, airbag clockspring, wave washer, and airbag clockspring retaining snap-ring. Finally, reinstall the steering wheel and enable the airbag system.
