Q:
How to replace brake pads on a Chevrolet C1500 and K1500? Posted by Customer
A:
Loosen the front wheel lug nuts, raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Apply the parking brake. Remove the wheels. Remove about two-thirds of the fluid from the master cylinder reservoir because, as the pistons are pushed in for clearance to allow the pads to be removed, the fluid will be forced back into the reservoir. Work on one brake assembly at a time. Push the piston back into the bore to provide room for the new brake pads. A C-clamp can be used to accomplish this. Remove the C-clamp. Remove the two caliper mounting bolts. Lift the caliper off the disc and remove the outer pad. Pull the inner pad out of the caliper and remove it. Fasten the caliper out of the way with a piece of wire to prevent damage to the brake hose. Remove the mounting bolt seals, then use a scribe or similar tool to extract the rubber bushings from inside the caliper ears. Clean the caliper and mounting bolts and check them for corrosion and damage. Replace the bolts with new ones if they're significantly corroded or damaged. Inspect the brake disc carefully. If machining is necessary, follow the information to remove the disc. Begin reassembly by installing the new rubber bushings and seals in the caliper. Fill the space between the bushings with silicone grease. Position the inner pad, with the clip, in the caliper so the wear indicator is facing the rear of the caliper. Position the outer pad in the caliper so the tab at the bottom of the pad is engaged in the cutout in the caliper. Hold the caliper in position over the disc, push the mounting bolts through the bushings and thread them into the bracket. Tighten them to the torque listed in the specifications. Install the brake pads on the opposite wheel, then install the wheels and lower the vehicle. Add brake fluid to the reservoir until it's full. Pump the brakes several times to seat the pads against the disc, then check the fluid level again. Check the operation of the brakes before driving the vehicle in traffic. Try to avoid heavy brake applications until the brakes have been applied lightly several times to seat the pads.

Q:
How to Remove, Clean, and Install Brake Calipers and Pads for Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana? Posted by Customer
A:
To begin the brake removal process, start by removing the cap from the brake fluid reservoir and draining about two-thirds of the fluid. Then, loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle and secure it on jackstands, and remove the wheels. Work on one brake assembly at a time, positioning a drain pan underneath and cleaning the caliper and surrounding area with brake system cleaner. Use a C-clamp to push the piston back into its bore, being careful not to overflow the fluid in the master cylinder. On older models, remove the caliper mounting bolts and lift the caliper off the disc, removing the outer and inner pads. Remove the mounting bolt seals and rubber bushings from inside the caliper ears, clean and inspect the caliper and mounting bolts, and replace them if necessary. Install new rubber bushings and seals in the caliper, filling the space between the bushings with silicone grease. Apply anti-squeal compound to the backing plates of the new brake pads and position the inner and outer pads in the caliper. Hold the caliper in position over the disc, insert and tighten the mounting bolts. For installation, repeat the process on the opposite wheel, install the wheels, and lower the vehicle. Add brake fluid to the reservoir and pump the brakes to seat the pads against the disc. Check the fluid level and test the brakes before driving. On newer models, pivot the caliper up to expose the brake pads and follow the same steps. Finally, tighten the mounting bolts and wheel lug nuts to the proper torque specifications, depress the brake pedal to bring the pads into contact with the disc, and check the brake fluid level and operation of the brakes before normal use.
