- A:Brake pedal height is the distance the pedal sits away from the floor. If the pedal height is not within the specified range, loosen the locknut on the brake light switch located in the bracket to the rear of the brake pedal and turn the switch in or out until the pedal height is correct. Retighten the locknut. The free play is the pedal slack, or the distance the pedal can be depressed before it begins to have any effect on the brakes. To check brake pedal free play, measure the distance between the natural resting place of the pedal and the point at which you first encounter resistance. It should be as specified. If it isn't, loosen the locknut on the brake booster input rod, to which the brake pedal is attached.
