To remove the brake assembly, start by loosening the wheel lug nuts and raising the rear of the vehicle on jackstands. Release the parking brake and remove the wheel. Before removing anything, clean the brake assembly with brake cleaner and allow it to dry. Unhook the return spring from the adjuster lever and remove the brake adjuster lever from the stud at the top of the rear shoe. Remove the lower spring between the front and rear shoes. Depress the hold-down spring and turn the retainer 90 degrees, then release it. Pull the front shoe away from the adjuster mechanism and the wheel cylinder while holding the adjuster mechanism back. Twist the shoe until the spring end comes free of the shoe. With the front shoe removed, disconnect the other end of the upper return spring and remove it. Remove the hold-down spring from the rear shoe. Remove the rear shoe and adjuster assembly from the backing plate, then use pliers to remove the clip holding the parking brake lever to the stud on the rear shoe. To install the new rear shoe, assemble the parking brake lever and crimp the C-washer closed. Guide the hold-down pin through while positioning the rear shoe and secure it with the hold-down cup/spring/outer cup over the pin. Lubricate the moving parts of the adjuster screw with high-temperature grease and install the adjuster assembly on the rear shoe. Hook the spring into the hole in the rear shoe and guide it through the front shoe. Align the top of the front shoe with the adjuster and the slot in the piston on the wheel cylinder. Secure the front shoe with the hold-down spring. Install the lever for the automatic adjuster and connect the upper spring to the adjuster lever. Install the lower spring between the two shoes. Before reinstalling the drum, check it for any damage and resurface if necessary. Install the brake drum on the axle flange, followed by the wheel and lug nuts. Lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts to the specified torque. Adjust the brakes by making forward and reverse stops and operating the parking brake until satisfactory pedal action is obtained. Finally, carefully check the operation of the brakes before driving the vehicle.

With the hole in the disc and hub flange aligned with the star-wheel adjuster, you can adjust the parking brake shoe-to-drum clearance with a screwdriver by turning the star-wheel adjuster up to contract the shoes, or down to expand the shoes.
