Any repairs to the fuel tank or filler neck should be carried out by a professional with experience in this critical and potentially dangerous work. It is important to note that even after cleaning and flushing, explosive fumes can still remain and ignite during the repair process. If the fuel tank is removed from the vehicle, it is crucial to avoid placing it in an area where sparks or open flames could ignite the fumes coming out of the tank. This is particularly important to consider in garages where a natural gas-type appliance is located, as the pilot light could potentially cause an explosion.

To remove the fuel tank, start by relieving the fuel pressure and disconnecting the battery. Then, raise the vehicle and disconnect the electric fuel pump wire harness connector. From underneath the vehicle, disconnect the fuel feed, fuel return, canister vent, filler, and filler breather hoses. Remove the catalytic converter heat shield and support the tank while removing the main support bracket and smaller support straps. Carefully lower the tank and remove the fuel gauge sending unit/electric fuel pump assembly. Clean the tank before reinstalling it, ensuring all insulating pads are in place. Raise the tank into position, tighten the strap bolts, and install the main bracket. Reconnect the fuel tank filler and breather hoses, fuel feed and return hoses, and vapor canister hose. Thread the electrical wiring for the fuel pump and sending unit into the engine compartment and install the catalytic converter heat shield. Lower the vehicle and reattach the electrical leads for the fuel pump and sending unit.
