To check the thermostat's condition, you can follow these steps: Remove the thermostat and inspect it for excessive corrosion and damage. If either of these conditions is noted, it is advisable to replace it with a new one. Next, place the thermostat in a container filled with water and heat the water to the temperature stamped on the bottom of the thermostat (usually 195°F). If your vehicle's thermostat is rated at a different temperature, heat the water accordingly. When submerged in hot water at its rated operating temperature, the valve should open fully. Allow the water to cool until it is about 10 degrees below the temperature indicated on the thermostat (around 185 degrees). At this temperature, the thermostat valve should close completely. If the thermostat operates properly during these tests, you can reinstall it. However, if it does not, it is recommended to purchase a new thermostat with the same temperature rating.
