To remove the airbag module in a 2002-2003 model, start by turning the steering wheel straight ahead and disconnecting the battery. Remove the upper steering column cover and turn the steering wheel to access the triangle-shaped holes in the rear. Insert a flat-blade screwdriver into one of the holes and twist it while gently pulling on the corner of the steering wheel center/airbag to release the airbag. Repeat this procedure for the other holes and disconnect the electrical connector for the module. If necessary, remove the airbag clockspring by disengaging the retaining fingers and disconnecting the electrical connectors. The removal process for a 2004-2005 4-Cyl model is similar, but there is only one triangle-shaped hole to access. For a 2005 V6 model, use two flat-blade screwdrivers in one of the holes and push them toward the rear of the vehicle. In 2006 and later models, there are two round holes in the rear of the steering wheel. Use a blunt tool to push in on the clip in each hole to release the retainers. To install the airbag module, make sure the front wheels are facing straight ahead and rotate the hub of the clockspring counterclockwise until it becomes harder to turn. Then, rotate it clockwise and count the turns to center it. Install the clockspring, align the marks on the hub and shaft, and tighten the nut. Plug in the electrical connectors, install the airbag module securely, and reconnect the battery.
