- A:To remove the steering wheel, start by parking the vehicle with the wheels straight ahead and disconnecting the negative battery terminal. Disable the airbag system and remove the steering column covers. Release the airbag module by inserting a flat-bladed screwdriver into slots on the backside of the steering wheel, spreading the retaining springs, and turning the screwdriver to release the airbag retaining posts. Lift the airbag module away from the steering wheel, disconnect its electrical connectors, and remove it. Next, remove the steering wheel nut, mark the relationship of the steering wheel to the shaft, and use a steering wheel puller to safely remove the steering wheel while being cautious not to thread the puller bolts too far. Disconnect any remaining electrical connectors. To install a clockspring, ensure it is centered with the arrow pointing up; if the steering shaft was turned, follow steps to center it correctly. Installation involves aligning the marks on the shaft and steering wheel hub, tightening a new steering wheel nut to the specified torque, reinstalling the airbag module, and enabling the airbag system.Posted by GMPartsGiant Specialist
