Spark plug wires used in electronic ignition systems feature a carbon-impregnated cord conductor enclosed in 8mm silicone rubber insulation, providing excellent insulation for high electronic ignition system voltages and withstanding high temperatures. Silicone spark plug boots create secure seals on the plugs. When replacing aging or damaged spark plug wires, it's advisable to obtain a wire set designed for your specific engine model as they come pre-cut to the correct length with boots already installed. These wires are soft but can handle high heat and voltage, although they are susceptible to scuffing and cutting. Proper routing is crucial to prevent chafing or damage. During tune-ups or inspections, visually examine the wires for burns, cuts, or insulation damage, checking the boots and nipples on the distributor cap and coils, and replace any compromised wires. Additionally, every 50,000 miles (80,000 km) or 60 months, measure wire resistance with an ohmmeter to identify excessive resistance, which can cause misfiring and starting issues in damp conditions. To check resistance, disconnect wires one at a time, connect an ohmmeter lead to the spark plug side of the wire and another to the distributor or coil side, replacing wires with resistance exceeding 7k ohms per foot. A light mist of water can help locate intermittent issues, as ignition components will arc to ground when a secondary component is faulty. When removing and installing spark plug cables, label and replace them one at a time where possible. Carefully remove the spark plug wire boots from the spark plugs by twisting and pulling on the boot, never directly on the wire. For 4.5L and 4.9L engines, disconnect spark plug cables at the distributor assembly and spark plugs, and remove the spark plug channel and wires from the engine. For 4.6L engines, disconnect spark plug cables at the Ignition Control Module (ICM) assembly and spark plugs, and remove the spark plug channel and wires, then follow the installation steps in reverse order.
