Q:
What are the functions and locations of flasher units in a Buick Skylark,Oldsmobile Omega and Pontiac Phoenix's electrical circuits? Posted by Customer
A:
Small canister shaped flasher units are incorporated into the electrical circuits for the directional signals and hazard warning lights. When the units are functioning properly an audible check can be heard with the circuit in operation. If the turn signals fail on one side only and the flasher unit cannot be heard, a faulty bulb is indicated. If the flasher unit can be heard, a short in the wiring is indicated. If the turn signal fails on both sides, the fault may be due to a blown fuse, faulty flasher unit or switch, or a broken or loose connection. If the fuse has blown, check the wiring for a short before installing a new fuse. The hazard warning lamps are checked in the same manner as the turn signals. The hazard warning flasher unit is located in the fuse box found under the dash on the right side. The turn signal flasher is mounted on the base of the steering column support. When replacing either of these flasher units, it is important to buy a replacement of the same capacity. Check the new flasher against the old one to be assured of the proper replacement.

Q:
What is the location and function of the turn signal flasher and hazard flasher in a Chevrolet Blazer,S10,GMC Jimmy and Sonoma? Posted by Customer
A:
The turn signal flasher is a small canister-shaped unit located under the dash behind the knee bolster or behind the glove compartment on 1999 and later models. It is next to the large wiring disconnect and is retained by a plastic strap. When functioning properly, an audible click can be heard during its operation. If the turn signals fail on one side and the flasher unit does not make its characteristic clicking sound, a faulty turn signal bulb is indicated. If both turn signals fail to blink, it may be due to a blown fuse, a faulty flasher unit, a broken switch, or a loose or open connection. To replace the flasher, the under-dash panel or knee bolster needs to be removed and the flasher needs to be unplugged. The replacement unit should be identical to the original. The hazard flasher, which flashes all four turn signals simultaneously when activated, is located in the instrument panel behind the knee bolster or behind the glove compartment on 1999 and later models. It is also next to the large wiring disconnect and is retained by a plastic strap. The hazard flasher is checked in a similar fashion to the turn signal flasher. To replace it, the under-dash panel or knee bolster needs to be removed for access and the flasher needs to be unplugged. The replacement unit should be identical to the one it replaces.

Q:
What is the purpose of relays in Chevrolet Blazer,S10,GMC Jimmy and Sonoma and how can a faulty relay be identified and fixed? Posted by Customer
A:
Several electrical accessories in the vehicle use relays to transmit the electrical signal to the component. If the relay is defective, that component will not operate properly. The various relays are grouped together in several locations. Some relays are grouped together in the engine compartment. If a faulty relay is suspected, it can be removed and tested by a dealer service department or a repair shop. Defective relays must be replaced as a unit.
