The neutral safety switch, which incorporates the back-up light switch, can be removed and installed from 4T60 and 4T60-E Transaxles by first disconnecting the negative battery cable. In 1992-93 Eldorado and Seville, the air cleaner housing and duct should be removed. The shift linkage, electrical connector, and vacuum hose should then be removed, followed by the attaching nut and the shift lever. The fuel line bracket and bolt should be removed next, followed by the retaining bolts and the switch. To install, the process should be reversed, with the switch adjusted and the retaining bolts tightened to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm). For 4T80-E Transaxle, the process is similar, but the control cable at the lever on the transaxle manual shaft should be removed, followed by the control cable bracket and cable on the transaxle. The retaining nut and transaxle manual shaft lever should be removed, followed by the electrical connector and hose, and then the retaining bolts and the neutral safety switch. To install, the process should be reversed, with the switch adjusted and the retaining bolts tightened to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm), and the manual shaft lever retaining nut tightened to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm). The neutral safety switch must be adjusted so that the engine will start in PARK or NEUTRAL only to avoid personal injury. The neutral safety switch retaining bolts should be loosened, the transaxle manual shaft rotated to the NEUTRAL position, and the switch rotated until a 2.34 mm gauge pin can be inserted in the adjustment hole. The switch retaining bolts should then be tightened to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm) on 4T60 and 4T60-E transaxles or 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm) on 4T80-E transaxles.

Installation involves using a special adjustment tool, aligning the switch hub flats with the flats on the manual shaft, securing the switch with mounting bolts, removing the adjustment tool, installing the manual shift lever, and checking the switch operation.

To remove and install the Neutral Safety Switch on 4T80-E Late Models, start by setting the parking brake and gear selector to neutral. Remove the electrical connector, cable, and lever, followed by the switch itself. When installing the new switch, ensure the transmission is still in neutral and use an alignment tool to properly position the switch. Check for a cracked carrier if necessary. After installation, verify that the engine starts only in park or neutral and check the shifter for normal movement. Finally, reattach the cable, lever, and electrical connectors.

Firmly apply the parking brake and set the shift lever to Neutral. Pry the shift cable from the transmission shift lever ball-stud, remove the nut retaining the shift lever to the shaft, and take off the lever. Disconnect the electrical connector, remove the mounting bolts, and slide the switch off the shaft. Lightly file the shaft's end if needed. To install the switch with the shaft still in Neutral, align the switch's flats with those on the shaft, lower the switch onto the shaft, and install the bolts. Adjust the switch's alignment by moving it as necessary. Reinstall the shift lever and cable, verify starting in Park and Neutral, and adjust further if needed by loosening the mounting bolts and rotating the switch slightly until it functions correctly.

The purpose of the starter safety switch is to prevent the engine from being cranked unless certain conditions are met.

For 1994 and earlier models, to adjust the shift lever switch, place the shift lever in Neutral (N) and move the switch housing fully toward the Low (L) gear position to the right, then shift the lever to Park (P) to ensure proper adjustment. To replace the switch, place the shift lever in Neutral, unplug the electrical connectors, spread the tangs on the housing, and lift the switch. Align the actuator on the switch with the hole in the shift tube, position the rear part of the switch to fit into the lower jacket's cutout, push down on the front to engage the two tangs, and move the shift lever to Park to complete the adjustment. Plug in the electrical connectors. For 1995 and later models, to replace and adjust the switch, firmly apply the parking brake and set the shift lever to Neutral. Pry the shift cable from the transmission shift lever ball-stud, remove the nut retaining the shift lever to the shaft, and take off the lever. Disconnect the electrical connector, remove the mounting bolts, and slide the switch off the shaft. Lightly file the shaft's end if needed. To install the switch with the shaft still in Neutral, align the switch's flats with those on the shaft, lower the switch onto the shaft, and install the bolts. Adjust the switch's alignment by moving it as necessary. Before installing the switch, align the tang on the switch with the hole in the shift tube.
