    Q:
How to properly remove and install rear crankshaft seal in 4.6L V8 engine on Cadillac DeVille? Posted by Customer
    A:
Using a thin screwdriver or a seal removal tool, carefully remove the Crankshaft Seal from the engine block, ensuring not to damage the crankshaft surface while prying the seal out. Clean the bore in the block and the seal contact surface on the crankshaft, checking for scratches and nicks that could damage the new seal and cause oil leaks; if the crankshaft is damaged, a new or different crankshaft is necessary. Inspect the seal bore for nicks or scratches and carefully smooth it with a fine file if needed, taking care not to nick the crankshaft. A special tool, available at most auto parts stores, is recommended for installing the new seal; lubricate the lips of the seal with clean engine oil and slide it onto the mandrel until the dust lip bottoms squarely against the collar of the tool. If the tool isn't available, work the seal over the crankshaft and tap it into place squarely and evenly with a hammer and large-diameter socket or length of pipe. Align the dowel pin on the tool with the dowel pin hole in the crankshaft and attach the tool by hand-tightening the bolts. Turn the tool handle until the collar bottoms against the case, seating the seal, then loosen the tool handle and remove the bolts and the tool. Check that the seal is installed evenly and at the same depth as the original, with the remainder of the installation being the reverse of removal.

    Q:
How to replace the front Crankshaft Seal in 4.6L V8 engine on Cadillac DTS? Posted by Customer
    A:
To install the timing cover, first remove the drivebelt and loosen the bolts on the right front wheel, then raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands before removing the right front wheel. Next, take off the splash shields from below the engine compartment and the right fenderwell, followed by the engine-to-transaxle brace and the torque converter cover, locking the flywheel to the transaxle with a special tool. If there isn't enough room to remove the damper, support the engine/transaxle subframe with a heavy-duty floor jack, loosen the rear subframe bolts, and lower the subframe until the crankshaft damper is clear of the fenderwell. Use a strap or chain wrench to hold the damper while removing the center bolt with a long breaker bar, ensuring the engine is securely locked from turning. Attach a puller to the damper to draw it off the crankshaft carefully, then remove the seal from the cover with a seal removal tool, applying penetrating oil to ease the process. Clean the bore, position the new seal with the open end facing inward, and drive it squarely into the bore until fully seated. Next, remove the power steering hose bracket bolt, the drivebelt tensioner bolt, and the drivebelt idler pulley bolt, then take off the crankshaft damper and the right engine mount and bracket. Remove the engine front cover and gasket, prying it loose carefully if stuck, and drive the seal out from the back side while supporting the cover. Clean the bore, position the new seal, and drive it into place. Remove old sealant from the front cover and engine block, ensuring the threaded bolt holes are clean. Apply RTV sealant to the mating surfaces and install the front cover, torquing the bolts in a specific order. Finally, apply anti-seize compound to the crankshaft snout and grease to the seal lips before installing the damper, using the retaining bolt to pull it onto the crankshaft.
