To check the shaft end play, you need to remove the road wheel and brake drum and attach a dial gauge with its stylus against the axleshaft end flange. Then, move the shaft in and out by hand and check if the end play exceeds 0.022 inch.

The procedures outlined below are applicable to all 1974-1977 models, except those with axle codes 'B' and 'O'. For 1978-1980 models, these procedures apply to all models except 'B'. To begin, raise the rear of the vehicle and securely support it. Remove the wheel and brake drum. Next, unscrew and remove the pressed steel cover from the differential carrier, allowing the oil to drain into a suitable container. Proceed by unscrewing and removing the lock screw from the differential pinion shaft, followed by the removal of the pinion shaft. Push the outer (flanged) end of the axleshaft inwards and remove the C-ring from the inner end of the shaft. Carefully withdraw the axleshaft, being mindful not to damage the oil seal in the end of the axle housing as the splined end of the axleshaft passes through it. To reinstall, follow the reverse order of removal, ensuring that the lock screw is tightened to the specified torque. Always use a new cover gasket and tighten the cover bolts to the specified torque. Finally, refill the unit with the correct quantity and grade of lubricant.

Disconnect the hydraulic brake lines from their clips on the axle housing.
