1987 Pontiac Fiero Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install an axle shaft on 1987 Pontiac Fiero?
A: Before doing so, unbolt the wheel lug nuts and the hub nut; thereafter proceed to lift the rear of the car and put it on jackstands. Take the rear wheel off, also disarm the park brake cable. This is followed by lifting the brake caliper and suspending it with the help of a piece of wire so that its position does not interfere with the process that will follow. Lose the driveaxle hub nut and get rid of the toe link rod from the knuckle but the knuckle should not be connected to either the strut bracket or the control arm. To separate the knuckle from the strut bracket prepare a paint pen or a scribe to mark the relation and remove the strut mounting bolts before lowering the strut and removing the knuckle. Should you be departing from the control arm, unscrew the pinch bolt at the base of the knuckle on the balljoint stud then raise the knuckle off the balljoint. With the puller insert the driveaxle from the hub and bearing assembly and use wires to support the drive axles such that the CV joints and the boots are not damaged. This requires pulling the driveaxle out of the transaxle by wedging a large screwdriver between the transaxle case and the inner CV joint housing; do not force this step as damage may occur. To install the transaxle, first screw it into the rear sub-frame as described earlier then insert the inner splined end of the driveaxle into the transaxle, if it does not advance fully rotate it gently with a screwdriver and apply some pressure if need be. Pass the outer splined end through the knuckle and over the hub and bearing assembly and apply a new knuckle seal if disposing the driveaxle. Place the hub nut and torque it until the required measure while holding the hub flange with a large screwdriver. Put the upper part of the knuckle into the strut bracket position, screw and torque the strut attach bolts if any. Fit the lower end of the clamp on the underside of the knuckle on the balljoint stud and fit the pinch bolt, if required torque it. Fit the toe link rod on the knuckle assembly and secure the same and fit the caliper of the brake and then connect the parking brake cable. Lastly, fit the tyre and wheel and then loosely screw the wheel lug nuts, raises the vehicle and then tighten the wheel lug nuts to the recommended torque.
