The following procedure applies to both the outer and inner CV joints on all 1984 and most 1985 Fieros Due to the double-offset design of the outer and inner CV joints, the two are essentially the same. Some 1985 vehicles have tri-pot design inner CV joints while all models of 1986 have tri-pot inner CV joints installed in driveaxles. In order to dismantle the double-offset CV joint, it is necessary to pull the driveaxle out, and if there is one, then to remove the deflector ring. Trim off boot retaining clamps and slide the boot back. The boot retainer can be removed by a number of turns in a clockwise and counter clockwise direction and should be tapped lightly to make it come out; the large snap-ring in the CV joint housing should be spread and the axleshaft pulled out while noting the housing, cage and inner race as indicators for reassembly. Use a light knock on the bearing cage to knock off the ball bearings, then use the fingers to lift the cage and inner race out and then clean the parts accordingly. Clean and looked for any signs of tear and wear and in that case replace it. In order to reassemble, dust or grease the ball grooves lightly, the inner race is then placed back into the cage with the retaining ring facing the small end of the joint and finally fill the joint with grease. Put the boot over the axleshaft, place the outer CV joint housing over the axleshaft until the ring is engaged and fit the CN boot retainer. Place the boot on and secure with the boot clamps, using the conventional screw type hose clamps if the special tool is not at hand. If this probe is to be fitted with a deflector ring, this should be mounted on the housing. For tri-pot type CV joints, the driveaxle has to be detached, the boot retaining clamps have to be cut, then tap on the boot retainer lightly. Disassemble the spider/bearing assembly and the boot and, in case you need to regain access to the needle bearings, unfasten the retainers or snap-rings; clean all the parts that you are going to analyze and check whether any of them is damaged. For reassembly, it is recommended that the spider, needle rollers, and tri-pot joint balls are greased before assembly then the spider is placed on the axleshaft and outer retaining ring fixed. The tri-pot housing should be packed with grease, while the axleshaft and spider are to be assembled in the housing and the boot and housing clamps fitted. Finally, install the driveaxle.
