1994 Pontiac Grand Prix Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What precautions should be taken before loosening the cylinder head bolts and what steps are involved in the removal and installation of the cylinder head in 2.8L,3.1L V6 engine on 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix?
A: Wait until your engine has cooled down totally before you can take off the cylinder head bolts. When fixing engines with old mileage or doing an engine overhaul, inspectors need to check camshaft height before taking away the cylinder head. Before you remove the battery, disconnect the negative cable first, making sure to turn off the Theft lockdown from the audio system. Take out the air cleaner first, then take out the intake manifold. Always disconnect the tube that holds the oil dipstick while you remove the front cylinder head. Take off and mark all wires and vacuum connections from each cylinder head before removing them. Tag your spark plug wires then remove each one. Keep track of which wire goes where by labeling them. Before removing the valve cover, disconnect the exhaust manifold and remove the one head being extracted. Remove the rocker arms and pushrods. Mark the engine's front on cardboard while adding a new head gasket. Punch holes on the cardboard showing where engine bolts go. Turn each cylinder head bolt one-quarter of a turn in reverse order from tightening, and keep the bolts in the cardboard holder. Gently pull the head off the engine, watch out for damaging the mating parts along the way, and when you meet resistance, strike the seal with a hammer and wood piece to break it. Put the head on wood blocks right after you lift it off to preserve its shape. When installing a cylinder head, both the head and block surfaces need to be completely spotless. Scrape all carbon and old gasket off with a gasket scraper, then wipe the exposed surfaces with lacquer thinner or acetone. Fix minor damage with a file, but get extensive damage from a machinist. Clean the bolt holes by inserting a tap of matching size into the head. Find the right size of the new gasket, then put it over the pins sticking out of the block engine, with the label facing upward. Place the head on the block very carefully, avoiding any contact with the gasket. After putting lubricant on both bolt threads and the undersides of all bolts, install them exactly where they're supposed to go. Start with the specified bolt sequence, tighten till you reach the proper torque level, then back off each bolt by the same steps, using the same order. The process of putting everything back is just the opposite of how you took things apart. Change the engine oil and filter.
