1996 Pontiac Grand Prix Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the timing cover in 2.3L four cylinder (Quad-4) engine on 1996 Pontiac Grand Prix?
A: First, the timing chain and sprockets along with the exhaust manifold have to be unwired. The water pump has to be removed if the replacement timing chain housing is to be installed. Then remove the timing chain housing-to-belt tensioner bracket brace and the four bolts that attach the oil pan to timing chain housing. Rmve the timing chain housing to block lower fasteners and the lowest cover retaining stud from the timing chain housing. Remove the rear engine mount nut, in the case you need to slightly loosen the front engine mount nut so that only three threads remained engaged. Take out the eight chain housing to camshaft housing bolts, next place a floor jack beneath the oil pan with an 18 inches piece of lumber under the point of support. Lift the engine up off the front and rear mounts so that the front mount bracket engages the nut that secures the timing chain housing and gaskets to the block, then remove the housing along with the gaskets along with taking further care to clean the mating surfaces. The timing chain housing should be installed with new gaskets, after which the bolts to be tightened to the required torque should be used. All the other steps include the reversal of the removal process which has been described above.
