1997 Pontiac Grand Prix Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Remove and Install Timing Cover in 3.8L V6 engine on 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix?
A: Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery, ensuring that the Theftlock audio system's lockout feature is turned off if applicable. Set the parking brake and place the transmission in Park, then raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands before removing the splash shield from the right inner fender. Drain the oil and coolant, then remove the coolant hoses from the timing cover. Take out the large (8 mm) water pump-to-block bolts while leaving the smaller (6 mm) diameter bolts in place. Remove the vibration damper and the crankshaft position sensor shield if equipped, then unplug the connectors from the oil pressure, camshaft, and crankshaft sensors on distributor-less ignition models or remove the distributor if applicable. Remove the oil pan and the timing cover-to-engine block bolts, noting that two of the bolts also secure the crankshaft sensor, which should be lifted off when removing these bolts. Separate the cover from the front of the engine, checking for a spring and button that controls camshaft end play inside the cam sprocket, and look for any missing parts in the oil pan. Use a gasket scraper to eliminate all traces of old gasket material and sealant from the cover and engine block, taking care not to damage the aluminum cover. Clean the gasket sealing surfaces with lacquer thinner or acetone, and for 1994 and earlier models, check the camshaft thrust surface in the cover for excessive wear, as a worn surface will require a new cover. Remove the oil pump cover and pack the cavity with petroleum jelly before installing the new cover. Apply a thin layer of RTV sealant to both sides of the new gasket, position it on the engine block, and ensure the spring and button are in place at the end of the camshaft before attaching the cover. The oil pump drive must engage with the crankshaft or distributor gear. Apply thread sealant to the bolt threads and install them finger tight, then install the crankshaft sensor but leave the bolts finger tight until the next step. Follow a criss-cross pattern when tightening the other bolts, working up to the torque in three steps to avoid warping the cover. Use a special crankshaft sensor adjuster tool to position the crankshaft sensor on the timing cover and tighten the bolts to the specified torque. The remainder of the installation follows the reverse order of removal. Finally, add oil and coolant, start the engine, and check for leaks.
