1998 Pontiac Grand Prix Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the timing cover in 2.8L,3.1L V6 engine on 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix?
A: Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery, ensuring that the Theftlock audio system's lockout feature is turned off if applicable. Loosen the water pump pulley bolts without removing them, then take off the serpentine drivebelt. Remove the water pump pulley and the vibration damper. Unbolt the drivebelt tensioner and idler if equipped, then drain the coolant and engine oil. Remove the alternator and loosen the mounting bracket, followed by unbolting the power steering pump and tying it aside while leaving the hoses connected. Unbolt the flywheel/driveplate cover below the transaxle and remove the starter. Take off the oil pan and disconnect the coolant hoses from the fill pipe and water pump. Unbolt the spark plug wire shield at the water pump and disconnect the canister purge hose, tying it aside. If necessary, remove the crankshaft position sensor assembly from the timing cover. Remove the timing cover-to-engine block bolts, noting that some require T-40 and T-50 Torx bits. Separate the cover from the engine, tapping it gently with a soft-face hammer if it is stuck. Use a gasket scraper to eliminate all old gasket material and sealant from the cover and engine block, taking care not to damage the aluminum cover. Clean the gasket sealing surfaces with lacquer thinner or acetone, then apply a thin layer of ATV sealant or equivalent to both sides of the new gasket and position it on the engine block. Attach the cover to the engine and install the bolts, applying sealant to the bottom of the gasket. Tighten the fasteners in a criss-cross pattern, working up to the torque in three steps. The remainder of the installation follows the reverse order of removal. Finally, add oil and coolant, start the engine, and check for leaks.
