1999 Pontiac Grand Prix Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install timing cover in 3.4L V6 engine on 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix?
A: To remove the components, first, safety, turn off the negative battery terminal then if the Theftlock audio system has this feature, put off the lock out. Then, unbolt the serpentine drivebelt, next dismantle the camshaft timing belt tensioner and its bracket, followed by the timing belt and idler pulleys with dictation of rotation. Continue to eliminate the front engine lift bracket, cooling fans and also to detach the coolant hoses from the water pump. Disconnect the screws which fasten the heater pipe to the frame, the starter, the damper and the alternator. For manual transmission cars only, remove the front-to-rear engine mount bracket brace, which is unique to the manual transmission LX. Go on and dispose the oil filter, the oil cooler assembly together with the oil pan front nuts and bolts followed by the loosening of the other nuts and bolts. Remove the bolt on the air conditioning compressor and put it out of the way but do not disconnect the refrigerant connections. You get to take out the lower timing cover bolts, the intermediate shaft timing belt sprocket, and the water pump pulley. On cars with a manual transmission the front exhaust air pipe check valve should also be removed. Remove all wiring or relays in the vicinity that might hinder the removal of the cover, then remove all the timing cover to engine block bolts and pry the cover off the engine, if needed, gently using a soft-faced hammer. It is also important that when removing all the gasket material and sealant from the cover and the engine block, avoid having to scratch the aluminum surface of the two. During the installation, fit the new gasket and the RTV sealant must be applied on the lower periphery of the timing cover before fitting it. Apply thread sealant on the bolts of the upper timing cover and fasten them alternately in a diagonal order to the required torque. Lastly, reverse the procedure and start with the start of the engine and when it is over add oil and coolant and perform leak test.
