1997 Pontiac Grand Prix Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: Should engine mounts be replaced immediately if they are broken or deteriorated to prevent damage to drive line components in 2.5L four cylinder engine on 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix?
A: They are very reliable components which hardly demand any care but if ever they are worn out or broken, then they must be replaced at once in order not to bring pressure on parts of the driveline which may lead to wear or damage. If there is any suspicion that the mounts have gone weak or you just want to verify, then you need to lift the engine slightly off the mounts. First safely position the car with jackstands under the vehicle and put a jack under the engine oil pan placed a wooden beam between the head of the jack and the oil pan and slowly lift the engine little to take the load off the mounts. Look for cracks in the mounts; hard rubber around the backs of the mounts and they should be separate from the metal plates; the rubber may split vertically down the middle. Inspection of relative movement between mount plates and engine/frame can be done by using large screwdriver or pry bar; if movement is observed, lower the engine and tighten mount fasteners. To prevent further degradation of the rubber mounts, immerse a brush that was soaked in rubber preservative in it. For replacement, remove the negative battery terminal and chock up the vehicle if not already done, make sure the Theftlock audio system lock out feature is disabled before disconnecting the battery. Because of the torque directly from the engine, this strut has to be removed; after which, the engine will have to be slightly lifted with a jack or hoist and the fasteners will have to be removed to separate the mount from the frame. Following this, take out the bracket bolts or nuts of the mount to block and take off the mount. In installation, everything is done in reverse; the threads are treated with a thread locking compound and everything is tightened.
