1998 Pontiac Grand Prix Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to install a rear crankshaft seal on 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix?
A: For 2.2 and 2.5 liter four-cylinder and V6 engines, begin by cleaning the bore in the block and the seal journal on the crankshaft, checking for any scratches or nicks that could damage the new seal lip and lead to oil leaks; if the crankshaft is damaged, a new or different crankshaft is necessary. Apply a light coat of engine oil or multi-purpose grease to the outer edge of the new Crankshaft Seal and lubricate the seal lip with moly-base grease or engine assembly lube. Press the new Crankshaft Seal into place using a special tool if available, ensuring the seal lip faces the front of the engine; if the tool is not available, carefully work the seal lip over the crankshaft end and tap it in with a hammer and blunt punch until seated. For the 2.3 liter four-cylinder (Quad-4) engine, note that it has a one-piece seal fitting into a housing attached to the block, requiring the crankshaft to be installed first with the main bearing caps bolted in place before installing the new Crankshaft Seal in the housing. Check the seal journal for scratches and nicks before crankshaft installation, and remove the old seal from the housing using a hammer and punch, taking care to note its recessed depth for the new seal. Ensure the housing is clean, apply a thin coat of engine oil to the new Crankshaft Seal's outer edge, and press it squarely into the housing bore, lubricating the seal lips before slipping the seal/housing over the crankshaft and bolting it to the block. Use a new gasket without sealant and ensure dowel pins are in place before tightening the bolts gradually until they reach the specified torque.
