1999 Oldsmobile Cutlass Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What steps should be followed when installing a new or reground crankshaft and Crankshaft Seal in V8 engine on 1999 Oldsmobile Cutlass?
A: If a new or reground crankshaft is being installed, or if the original crankshaft has been reground, ensure the correct bearings are used. Install the rear main bearing oil seal with the upper half positioned on its cylinder block seat and the lower half on the rear main bearing cap, ensuring the lips face the front of the engine; if two lips are present, install the one with the helix towards the front. Use the protector installation tool for the seal halves and lubricate the seal lips with engine oil. Install the main bearings in the cylinder block and main bearing caps, lubricating the bearing surfaces with engine oil. Carefully lower the crankshaft into position to avoid damaging the bearing surfaces. Apply a thin coat of brush-on sealer to the block mating surface and the corresponding surface of the bearing cap, ensuring no sealer contacts the crankshaft or seal. Install the main bearing caps with bearings over the crankshaft and onto the cylinder block, ensuring the arrows point toward the front of the engine. Lubricate the cap bolts and install them without tightening; use a hammer and a block of wood to tap the shaft back and forth for alignment of the center main bearing, holding the crankshaft to the front while tightening the No. 3 cap bolts, followed by the remaining cap bolts. To measure crankshaft end play, push the crankshaft as far forward as possible and use a feeler gauge to measure the gap between the front of the rear main bearing and the crankshaft thrust surface. Install the flywheel to facilitate engine rotation during reassembly.
