Replace the manual transmission is not easy job for the home mechanic as you need to remove and assemble many components and narrow clearances require adjustments by the use of select fit spacers and snap-rings. While a competent individual can take off and place the transmission, overhauling should be done by a shop because the time and money that is taken can take up to the level of buying a rebuilt unit which are available from dealer parts or auto parts stores. Inexperienced mechanic can also rebuild a transmission, as long as he or she has special equipment and tools, and is very thorough with the process not to miss something. Some of the required special tools include internal and external snap ring pliers, bearing puller, slide hammer, assortment of pin punches, dial indicator, hydraulic press may be required, work bench and vise or transmission stand. On disassembly, and where possible, it is recommended to take physical notes on every component in terms of its position and methods of attachment and, where one has a grasp of the malfunctioning area, an assessment of the examination and in particular the replacement of specific components can be enhanced.
