2005 Chevrolet Astro Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the rear axle shaft on 2005 Chevrolet Astro?
A: To perform the removal of the rear axle assembly it is required to slacken the rear wheel lug nuts, lift the rear part of the car and adequately secure it on the jackstands under the frame, and then to detach the wheels. After that remove the brake drums and detach the vent hose from the top of the axle housing. Take off the lower shock abs crab nuts and bolts to disconnect the shock absorbers from their stands/struts. Take note of how the yoke faces toward the pinion flange then remove the four strap bolts from the universal joint and slide the driveshaft to the front of the vehicle butting it against the transmission and suspend it using a piece of wire . Remove the brake lines at the junction block mounted on the passenger side of the differential cover, unscrew the brake hose connector from the support bracket and seal them to avoid leakage of the brake fluid. Lose the parking brake cables at the equalizer and take off the rear stabiliser bar if provided. Place the jack under the differential housing and support the rear axle assembly; remove the anchor plate nuts and U-bolt nuts to surface the anchor plates from the top of the actual springs, be careful the axle will be balanced on the floor jack. Be very cautious when lowering the rear axle assembly to the floor. For installation, raise up the rear axle assembly into position for assembly of the rear end with pertinent U-bolts and anchor plates, tighten the nuts to the required torque setting making a provision that the stabilizer bar is put in place in case it is necessary. Attach the brake hose junction block to the support bracket, insert hydraulic lines into the junction block and tighten the tube nuts tightly. Then reconnect the driveshaft to the pinion flange making sure to align the marks that were made while removal processed and tighten the strap bolts. Connect the parking brake cables at the equalizer, properly fix the nuts on the shock absorber. Fit in the vent hose onto the differential housing then fit in the brake drums and the rear wheels with the lug nuts tightened in the recommended torque. Last but not least thoroughly what is left for you to do is to check the rear axle lubricant level and bleed the brakes.
