- Q: How to remove and install the axle shaft on Chevrolet Astro?A: Raise the rear of the vehicle, support it securely, and remove the wheel and brake drum. Remove the pressed steel cover from the differential carrier and allow the oil to drain into a container. Remove the lock bolt from the differential pinion shaft, then carefully take out the pinion shaft without turning the wheels or the carrier to prevent the spider gears from falling out. Push the outer end of the axleshaft in and remove the C-lock from the inner end of the shaft. Withdraw the axleshaft, ensuring not to damage the oil seal in the axle housing as the splined end passes through it. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring the lock bolt is tightened to the specified torque. Always use a new cover gasket and tighten the cover bolts to the specified torque. Refill the axle with the correct quantity and grade of lubricant.
