2008 Cadillac CTS Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the oil pump and crankshaft seal in 3.2L V6 engine on 2008 Cadillac CTS?
A: Empty the engine oil and extract the oil filter, then also remove the timing belt and the crankshaft drive gear. After that, it is necessary to eliminate the oil pan and to unscrew the oil pressure sending unit. Remove the mounting fasteners of the oil pick-up tube and get rid of the O-ring located in the groove of the tube. Remove the upper alternator mounting bolt, then taken out the lower bolt and swing the alternator aside while tightening the upper bolt. If still further space is desired, the alternator should be eliminee. Take out the oil pump-to-engine mounting bolts and then take off the pump, using a thin flat to free it between the front main bearing cap and the body of the pump, if you have to. Remove the relief valve plug, the spring, the 'O' ring and then the relief valve itself. The bolts holding the oil pump cover need to be removed and the cover as well as the oil pump drive rotor, and the driven rotor. Remove all parts and clean with solvent and visually check for signs of wear and damage, oil the relief valve and ensure that it drops freely in the bore provided. Inspect oil pressure relief valve, sliding surface and valve spring and since they are used as a set, replace them if faulty. Using the feeler gauge to ensure proper dimension check on clearance such as the clearance between the driven rotor to the oil pump body, rotor side clearance and rotor tip clearance, the worn parts were replaced or even disposed the entire oil pump assembly if compromised. Remove the old crankshaft seal from the timing chain cover and lubricate the outer perimeter of the new crank seal with MP grease or engine oil then gently instal it. Grease the seal lip and put petroleum jelly on the pump drive and driven rotors then fit them in timing chain cover (pump faces out). After this, apply petroleum jelly into the pump cavity to assist in pringing then fit the cover and finally tighten the cover bolts up to the requisite torque. Clean the oil pressure relief valve with the new clean engine oil, fit the valve and spring into the pump cover then fitted the plug. After reinstalling all the following processes are done in the reverse order that they were removed, and all gaskets used during the process are new ones; tightening oil pump mounting bolts are done by the cross pattern; when fixing the oil pan, a new filter is installed and the crankcase is filled with fresh oil. Last of all, examine the status of the oil warning lights in the instrument panel after the car has been started and allowed to run in idle for a while.
