Disconnect the negative cable from the battery, ensuring that on models with the Delco Loe II audio system, the lockout feature is turned off before any procedure requiring battery disconnection. For floor shift replacement, work in the engine compartment to disconnect the shift cable from the transaxle lever by removing the retaining nut, then remove the console between the seats. Disconnect the shift cable from the floor shift lever and bracket by pulling off the clip with needle-nose pliers and prying the cable off the lever pin with a screwdriver. Remove the right and left side sound insulators from the under dash portion of the console and pull back the carpet for access to the cable. In the engine compartment, detach the cable from the transaxle bracket by grasping the housing, cocking it to one side, and pulling. Trace the cable up to the firewall grommet, remove the screws from the grommet retainer, detach the grommet and retainer from the firewall, and pull the cable assembly through. Installation is the reverse of removal, followed by adjusting the cable as described. For column shift replacement, disconnect the cable from the transaxle lever and bracket in the engine compartment, then remove the left sound insulator under the dash in the passenger compartment. Disconnect the cable bracket on the steering column and detach the cable from the column shift lever, dislodging the grommet in the firewall to withdraw the cable from the vehicle. Installation is again the reverse of removal, followed by adjusting the cable. To adjust, place the shift lever and transaxle lever in Neutral, then push the locking tab on the shift cable to automatically adjust it, and finally reconnect the negative battery cable.
